Never made a scarecrow before? Don't worry — it's easier than you think and half the fun is getting creative. Here's everything you need to get started.
You don't need to spend much — raid the shed, the loft and the charity shop. You'll need:
Tie two lengths of wood together in a cross — one vertical (about 5ft) for the body, one horizontal (about 3ft) for the arms. This is your skeleton. Push the bottom of the vertical stake firmly into the ground so it stands upright. If you're displaying indoors or on a hard surface, fix it into a bucket of sand or soil.
Thread the horizontal stake through the arms of a shirt or jacket first, then attach it to the vertical pole. Put a pair of trousers on the bottom half and tie them at the waist. Now stuff everything generously — the more stuffing the better! Tie the ends of the sleeves and trouser legs with string so the stuffing doesn't fall out.
Fill a pillowcase or hessian sack with stuffing and tie it tightly at the neck. Draw or sew on a face — buttons make great eyes, and a bit of fabric or paint works for the mouth and nose. Push the head onto the top of the vertical stake and secure with string. Add a hat to finish it off!
This year's theme is Heroes & Villains — so get creative! A superhero cape, a wizard's hat, a villain's mask, a knight's armour made from cardboard — anything goes. Think about what character your scarecrow is and add the details that make it instantly recognisable. Signs, props and accessories all add to the fun.
Set your scarecrow up in your front garden where walkers on the trail can see it clearly. The more visible the better! Make sure it's secure so it won't topple in the wind. On the day, judges will walk the route — so make sure yours is looking its best on 12th September.
Please make sure your scarecrow is up and visible by 10am on the day. This gives our photographer the chance to photograph all entries, which will then be printed and displayed at the village hall where the votes are collated.
